Our Thanksgiving celebration this year was quite unexpected and nontraditional.  We’ve been celebrating Thanksgiving for the past few years at our home with out of town family members and friends.  We would watch the Thanksgving parade in the morning while cooking the turkey and everything else.  This year my sister and brother-in-law (they live 5 hours away) decided to host Thanksgiving dinner at their home.  It was a nice change for us to be just the guests and not doing anything else.  I was so looking forward to just relax and enjoy Thanksgiving dinner instead of running around the house like a chicken with its head cut off.

Well, sometimes things just don’t go as planned.  Hubby received a phone call from work the day before Thanksgiving.  He had to go in to sub for a sick colleague that night as well as the next…that’s showbiz for you!  So we made a decision to stay and celebrate Thanksgiving as a family because we didn’t want to be apart.  Since I didn’t plan on cooking for Thanksgiving hubby organized the dinner for us at a restaurant instead.  We watched the Thanksgiving parade that morning and then headed to the restaurant for a Thanksgiving lunch.  I chose this cashmere turtleneck sweater dress because I wanted to wear something that is Thanksgiving feast proof…just in case I can’t help myself with second and/or third servings.  I finished the look with a waist belt to hopefully hold my stomach in place while not compromising the style.  I’m glad I did 🙂

When hubby pulled into the parking lot I thought he was lost…it was next to a gas station and trash bins!  When I walked into the place I wanted to cry.  I could smell the cigarette odor that’s been lingering and saturated for years instead of the sweet baked turkey in the oven that I was so used to.  Could this get any worst?  Luckily, we were greeted by a very nice family (owners of the restaurant) and then served with platters of fantastic Thanksgiving traditional food. I felt at ease and comfortable immediately.  It felt like Thanksgiving again!

Sometimes we expect everything to be perfect for every occasion that we forget the only thing should be perfect is spending time with each other as a family.  It took a hole in the wall restaurant to shook my awareness and reminded me to be grateful and thankful that we still have each other and our health no matter where and how we celebrate Thanksgiving.  I’d love to hear how you have celebrated your Thanksgiving!

  1. Happy Thanksgiving!!! I agree, the only thing that matters is the family, all the unexpected things ruin our plans but we have to stay positive and enjoy the day no matter what! I’m glad you had a nice dinner with your hubby, the best thing is you don’t have to clean up after thanksgiving cooking, right?;)

That’s a great point Elena! Who wants to clean up after a huge meal right?

  2. Happy Thanksgiving! This holiday was never a huge one for my family and my dad and I had started a tradition years back where we would get yard work done during the day (those damn leaves!) and go out for dinner at night. It was a great tradition and one that I will cherish… my mom and I tweaked it a bit this year by doing a movie & dinner instead of the leaves 🙂 I am glad you were at least able to be with your family for this holiday… and at least the graffiti’d dumpsters made for a great backdrop!

  4. Funny you tell this story. As I was thinking ‘I wished we had gone to a restaurant’ as I stood, exhausted, cleaning up my kitchen. I love Thanksgiving, but it can be a tedious process. I would have loved to sit down at a restaurant and enjoyed a quiet meal.
And your ensemble is lovely. I’m a huge fan of gray and find it so easy to style.

You look fabulous!! All is well that ends well… Love the jacket a lot!!

  6. I love the outfit. We were not able to spend with our “real” family (it was too far and too expensive to go home, especially since I had to work until 5 Wednesday). We spent ours with friends who have become family here. It was great!

  7. Awww ! Sorry your visit with friends was a no-go, but lucky you with such a thoughtful huz. And how grateful you must be for a restaurant that is open on Thanksgiving! (None here, sadly. Mine is even closed!)
Brilliant outfit, especially for the occasion. Sometimes, function is critical, and fashion comes second, but you managed to make it all work in fine style! Clever Mama!

  8. Stopping by from Totally Posted Tuesday! This coat is so fabulous! Sounds like your thanksgiving was a little crazy, but fun 🙂

  9. I’m glad it all turned out! That’s all that really matters is just being with your loved ones, it doesn’t always matter where its at as long as you can be together. We had to celebrate a few days early because of my hubby’s job but it worked out. The kids and I were able to spend the day with friends on Thanksgiving day.

  10. This coat is gorgeous! I’m glad you had a nice Thanksgiving, even if it wasn’t what you’d originally planned.
