 …Having Your Own Signature Style

What is a signature style?  Who cares anyways!  There’s more to life than having one’s own signature style but admittedly there is inherent value and power in knowing what you are projecting to the world.  Whenever the term “signature style” conjure up from the conversation there are endless lists of iconic women and men come to mind.  Brigitte Bardot’s hair.  Twiggy’s Kewpie doll lashes.  Edie Sedgwick’s raccoon eyes.  Catherine Deneuve’s iconic French chic style.  Audrey Hepburn’s minimalist chic…and so on.  All of these women have one thing in common…they knew who they were and candidly expressed themselves.

Creating your very own signature style is personal.  Obviously, no two signatures styles are exactly alike because each person is unique.  But there are similarities that come into play as each person sets out to define their very own signature style.  To me a signature style is more than just what clothes we wear on a daily basis, it is also how we live and treat others around us.   I’ve often struggle with finding my signature style.  But aging and experiences in life have helped me define my true style.  So with that I can safely say my signature style is classic with edge.  I love mixing trends with classic pieces.  I try to live a minimalistic but healthy lifestyle.  I don’t do drugs (tried it once in my mid-thirties but never inhaled).  I don’t smoke (tried it once in college…did not like it).  I don’t drink heavily (only wine socially).  I treat people with kindness and respect unless I’m being crossed, back-stabbed or provoked then my evil twin will step in.  That’s my signature style and is still evolving.

So for today I’d like to talk about how to go about discovering exactly what your signature style is.  The key is to be honest with yourself and pay attention to what you gravitate towards when shopping, browsing magazines and Pinterest as well as travelling.  What look jives with your personality?  Lady Who Lunches?  Haute Hippie?  Uptown or Downtown Girl?  Power Mama?   Who inspires you?  What flavors or places leave you always wanting more?  What makes you unique?  What do you feel most comfortable and beautiful in?  What do people compliment you on a regular basis?  By answering some of these questions you are on your way to create your very own signature style. Style isn’t something that we are born with, it’s an ongoing creative process than can totally be learned.  After all, what you learned from your experiences and know what your options are can help you make the choice that fits you the best.

Thank you so much for visiting and have a fabulous day!

  1. I totally agree about personal style. Mine has definitely evolved a lot these past 10 years. I went from wearing frumpy t-shirts and jeans, as a student, to something I hope is a bit more sophisticated. I totally agree that personal style is about you, what do you like. It’s not about the latest fad, it’s about taking maybe the latest fad and making it your own. It’s not about trying to be someone you’re not, but about expressing yourself. Great post Janise.

  2. I totally agree, you need to find your personal style. Mine has evolved since becoming a mother over 3 years ago. I love how a great outfit can just change how you feel about yourself and go about your day.

  3. Great post! My signature style has definitely evolved over the years – I used to be super preppy and loved uber feminine details, but now I’d much rather wear more of a vintage/eccentric/boho look – I can’t get enough of anthro and free people… I think your signature style is just that… YOURS and has the freedom to evolve as you do… great piece xoxo Jenny
