Happy Monday everyone!  Hope your had a great weekend.

Our past couple weekends have been filled with nothing but getting in touch with nature.  After our my dismay visit at the habitat the weekend before we decided to give another try where we can hike and really experience nature, hopefully some bird watching and rock climbing?  That place was called Mt. Charleston, a 45 minute drive from the Vegas Strip, with 51 miles of hiking trails.   Our last visit was a little over a year ago but we did not stay overnight because the boys were still young at the time. Now that they are 3 and are pretty much trained to walk long distances, we thought it was time for them to explore and touch nature.

We stayed at a log cabin called “The Lodge”.  The cabin was rustic (as expected) but unexpectedly gorgeous in a retro way (if you love that 60s country style).  I didn’t expect a fireplace smack in the center of the cabin but luckily it did not block the stunning views from within!  For all that the price was still very affordable.

Our plan was to at least do 1 hike with the boys.  Now, any experienced hiker will tell you that you should start the hike small especially when you are hiking with toddlers.  We did the opposite, we chose to see the Mary Jane Falls where elevation was increasing and the trail was not in so great condition.  20 minutes into the hike and the boys got tired.  Ok, that was a bit aggressive and we didn’t reach our destination but really, would there be any water flowing down in the summer?

On our way back, while the twins giggled and played with small white rocks, G& I did a lot of talking and planning about our past, present and future.  There were a lot of “AHHA” moments during that talk.  Sometimes hiking is not about reaching its destination but a vehicle for family bonding while staying in shape in the most affordable way.  I think we succeeded in getting in touch with nature without seeing nature being exploited or hurt by humans.
