Winter is here and so is dryness, tightness, chapping, flaking, and even itchiness skin.  I deal with this every single winter.

If you also have the same skin care problems like I do then you came to the right place.  I’ll be sharing some simple skin care tips including some from Dove Dermatologist, Dr. Alicia Barba, to help you weather through the freezing dry temperatures.

I’ll also be sharing some skin care tips from Dr. Barba that I recently learned to attain a softer, hydrated, and healthier skin.

I follow these skin care tips religiously every winter to help soothe, hydrate, and protect my skin.

WATER IS YOUR BFF

When the air is dry and cold, water tends to evaporate off of the surface faster and easier.  I always drink extra two glasses of water – I prefer warm water but cold is perfectly fine.  If you love a glass of wine during dinner like me then you may want to add another cup of water to your water daily intake.

USE GENTLER PRODUCTS

Every late fall and early winter, I start to switch to gentler products from face to body because these products are formulated with moisturizers that do not strip moisture away from the skin.

AVOID HOT SHOWERS AND BATHS

I struggle with this tip every single winter!  I LOVE hot showers and baths and take them every single night, especially in the winter months.    A lot, if not all dermatologists, will tell you not to take hot showers and baths because that can take the moistures away from the skin.  For people like me who LOVE hot showers and baths, I add epsom salts, coconut oil, and use the Dove foaming body wash and after I dry off I spray with a coconut body oil to prevent skin dryness.  You can also use other essential oils like argan, tea tree, rose, or rosehip oils.  But if you can avoid hot showers and baths, DO!

USE SUNSCREEN – ALWAYS

This one’s a no brainer.  Regardless of which season you should use sunscreen to protect your face.  The winter UV rays may not be as strong as the summer UV rays but you are still exposed to the UV rays…so protect it every single day.  I’ve been protecting my skin with sunscreen every single day since I was a teenager.

Remember, sunscreen should always be the last step in your skincare routine and the first in your makeup. Make sure the product contains both UVA (long-wave rays) and UVB (short-ray waves) and go no lower than SPF30 in order to fully protect against burn, pigmentation, dark spots and fight against premature aging.

HOOK UP THE HUMIDIFIER

Heaters blasting hot dry air throughout our homes and offices can suck the moisture away from our skin.  Humidifiers get more moisture in the air, which helps prevent your skin from drying out.  You can easily find them at any drugstore, and the prices are affordable.  We have a couple and place one in each room.  We have not stopped using the humidifiers since we first used them for our twins when they were born.

LESS EXFOLIATION

I recently learned this tip from Dove Dermatologist, Dr. Alicia Barba.  Exfoliating is the key to a brighter complexion, but over exfoliating can strip the skin of its essential oils, leading to breakouts in the dryer, colder months.  A misconception is that rubbing off dead skin cells daily will improve skin, when it actually can dehydrate it.

CARE FOR YOUR UNDERARMS

Underarm skin is sensitive and an area that shouldn’t be overlooked.  Textures and fabrics in sweaters, undergarments and t-shirts can irritate the skin.  Underneath all those layers, you’ll need a product like Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant, which keeps you hydrated and protected.  Dove Advanced Care is formulated with moisturizers to help alleviate irritation and leave you with softer and smoother underarms, Dr. Barba says.

I’ve been using the Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant for the past week and really noticed a huge difference with my underarm skin.  This is an area that I’ve never thought of hydrating.  Not only does Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant provide 48-hour odor and wellness protection, the NutriumMoisture® and Dove ¼ moisturizer provides softer, smoother underarms.

GET INTO A BEDTIME ROUTINE

Bedtime is the best time to hydrate your skin, Dr. Barba says.  If you’re looking to decrease collagen breakdown, you might want to consider these three quick steps before hitting the hay: 1. Wash your face. 2. Apply a retinol. 3. Moisturize.
