Family Music Night-3

I can’t believe it’s already June and I hope you are enjoying our Celebrate Famiy Values series partnering with Kimberly-Clark. Another activity that we just started having fun together as a family is a night of Do Re Mis.

We are a musical family. G is a singer and has performed on Broadway, National Tours, and most recently starring on the Las Vegas Strip.  I guess you can say we get front row seats to his nightly performances. Luckily, the twins love music. Well, have you ever met a person who does not like music?  Music has been described as “the language of the soul”.

Music lifts the human spirit, affects our brains and bodies. Most importantly, music can significantly improve our motor and reasoning skills, which are significant and beneficial for kids.

Look, the twins are only 4 and their fine motor skills are still in the developmental stage. They both love to press the piano keys to hear the notes and they get so excited that they can’t keep their hands off of their dad as you can tell from these photos.  Obviously, music makes them joyful and more affectionate.  At least once a week we sing, dance, jingle and have a whole lot of fun making music together.

So here are some tips on how to engage your children in music appreciation with the family.

1. Play songs they are familiar with.

Our twins love the Kailou theme, the Sesame Street theme, and Barneys song and dance routine.  Because the twins know these tunes very well it empowers them to stay engaged.

2. Keep the sessions short.

G also teaches voice lessons and for his students under 6 he keeps his sessions to half an hour.  This will keep the kids engaged and leave them wanting more for next week’s session.

Even if you think they don’t understand the words quite yet, singing with them helps them learn new words and brings their imaginations to life. Music, no doubt, has the ability to make you sad, fearful, amused, happy and even irritated. But more often than not, it elevates our mood and decreases depression.  You never know if the next Mozart is living in your home 😉

  1. Thanks for great tips! My baby is still in the womb and I already try to expose her to good music as much as I can.
