Office Perfection: A Work Bag

If you want to look polished and professional at work then a work bag is essential.  It completes your outfit and defines what kind of business woman you are.   More often than not, looking for that perfect work bag can be a challenge.  You want to invest in a bag that can carry your go-to work essentials like a laptop, wallet, phone, and makeup bag without spending your entire rent on it.  This bag needs to look stylish, professional, and cool if you go from meetings straight to drinks at the end of the day.

Here are some tips on how to buy that perfect work bag without spending an arm and a leg.

1. Functional but stylish.

A bag, any bag, usually comes in 2 types of hardware; gold or silver.  Although I love silver I prefer a gold tone when it comes to handbags, especially a work bag.  Gold feels rich but soft and it goes with everything.

2. Size matters

Your bag should be around 12″ to 14″ wide by 10″ high so you can squish in items like ipad, laptop, notebook, and a phone.  You don’t want this bag to be too high that you have to dig deep to reach for these items.  Also, look for 6″ or smaller in depth because you don’t want to overstuff your bag.  Years ago, I made a mistake of buying my work bag that was 12″ high and I couldn’t make it sit straight underneath the travel seat in front of me.  Well, I ended up buying another bag.

3. Versatlity

Some may argue that the bag has to work in multiple ways from meetings to drinks at night with your co-workers.  And I couldn’t agree more.   Make sure this bag has thick double hands that are sturdy to hold it by hand.  Also, a long strap is recommended because it lets you sling it over your shoulder as an option.

4. Color

Choosing a neutral shade is the key here.  Make sure to pick a hue like black, navy, or tan.  Any of these colors will complement most of your wardrobe that can easily transition from day to night and season to season.

5. Materials

Look for a leather material that is not too shiny.  My favorite is a matte leather because it feels timeless but stylish at the same time.  This material also can stand up to everyday use due to its durability.

6. Weight

A lot of people ignore this but being a petite person like me, weight is extremely important when it comes to handbag shopping.  The bag should weigh as light (2 lbs or less) as possible because your laptop will most likely be at least 3 lbs while your ipad is 1 lb, and so forth (you can do the math).  THAT can be stressful on your shoulder and body, especially when you travel.
